Among many possible health behaviors, there are those directly related to the biological dimension of health, including physical activity and diet, and less concentrated on psychosocial skills and behaviors. Conversely, students educated in the humanities and social sciences, due to their dominant curriculum subjects, may be more focused on developing their potential in the area of psychosocial and spiritual health rather than physical health. Spirituality therefore forms a multidimensional theoretical construct. In essence, it constitutes transcendence understood as going beyond or above “the real I.” In this context, spirituality is defined as experiencing transcendence through inner peace, harmony, or connectedness to others (Boswell et al., 2006). Transcendence can take place both within the person (self-realization, self-improvement, and personal development) and outside the person.

My last blog post took us back some 4 billion years to set a foundation for deconstructing illness and disease. My intention was to build on that foundation and talk further about the evolutionary molecular and cellular mechanisms that exist in us today and determine whether we are diseased and ill versus healthy and well. My trajectory was to move from physical to mental to social, and then to spiritual illness and disease.

Spirituality may also refer to more generalized feelings of connectedness with others or strong personal values that may assist individuals with finding peace and contentment in their lives. Spirituality is broad in definition as it may range from beliefs and connectedness to organized religion or may be based on more generalized personal values” (Bergamo and White, 2016). For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol; you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
